It's incredible how stupid some people are.

10 Scientific Objects that changed the world

Important but I don't agree with them all...

The pilot ace computer should be replaced by Colossus, which was the very first and extremely important. No-one had ever dreamed calculations could be performed by a machine like this.

5 Awesome Movies Ruined By Last Minute Changes

(Title theirs, obviously)

Um, what it says really.

6 core processor relased. Codename: Dunnington?!?

They test the newest Xeon, with 6 cores, 16Mb of L3 and 1.6 billion transistors. Pricing starts at a mere $1100...

The only problem they have is getting their four socket system to load all 24 cores:

That's a lot of cores...

Some I've seen, some I've not. Good for a coffee break.

Amazing Diorama Art

I love the feel of some of these diaramas. The people, although tiny, have so much life to them.

APB - Another game I'm looking forward to

Like the bit on the video where someone skids sideways to a halt in a minivan - on top of someone standing in the street. Looks cool.

Arma II might just be something we could Steam up like L4D

It's never going to be a replacement for an evening of shouting "help" but it sounds like the Co-Op stuff is brilliant. Most of Rissignol's complaints is with the team-based AI single player but co-op multiplayer is where it's at. Have a look and a think. Worth a go as a get-together evening game?

AT-ATs are not just for Christmas

Charming flickr set.

Bangladesh news mistakes The Onion for real news

You have to laugh!

Banned words in Local councils

If such a ban were enforced here everyone would have to sit around in stoney silence, or become really good at charades.

Excuse me, I now have to go and deliver my presentation via the medium of interpretive dance...

Battlefield Heroes Beta is back...

Looks like this project hasn't sunk, it's just been quietly getting on with the act of coding!

Battlefield Heroes goes live

On the weekend I'm taking part in my 24 Hour RPG Contest! bastards!

Beware of barbeque cleaning

Extraordinary bit of nature finding a way.

Big magnets are dangerous.

Neodymium Iron Boron magnets are very powerful compared to old ferrous magnets, but what catches people out is not the increase in strength but the inverse cube law of attraction.

Mild squeamishness warning - there is a pic but I suspect the graphic stuff is in the further link.

Bike tank

.

BNP anti immigation poster uses a Spitfire flown by a Polish Squadron

You have to love how fucking stupid and ignorant Nationalists are.

Bob Harris photo diary of trip to Korean DMZ

No unauthorized movements of any kind, including even turning around to look at something behind you you've already passed. This can also provoke conflict. Violation of this rule ends the tour.
Fasacinating.

Long but worth reading through at lunch or some shit.

Breathtaking steampunk casemod

Love it! So much work went into it (about a year, aparently).

Bridenstine DKNY Rocket Racer

Armadillo Aerospace, a rocketry company that entered the X-prize and was founded by John Carmack has recently done some work on a rocket propelled badger light aircraft for a racing league using their hybrid (liquid fuel, cryogenic oxidiser) rocket engine. Much details, pics and video...

Clever stuff.

A humourous retort to the US Govt bailing out Wall St.

Captain forever, neat little 2D ship building, fighting game

If asteroids allowed you to build your own ship out of the enemies you destroy. Like it!

CCTV Camera densities in Britain

I love the fact that there are places with 1 or 2 cameras and only 200 people living there, so it seems like it's a mad police state.

City concept

The vertical city is a concept from Jesse van Dijk. The graphic artwork for it as you scroll down is superb!

Comixed - Good for a chuckle or two

The Amy Winehouse one is spot on.

Common Sense? Co-Operation?

It's about fucking time. Hopefully by 2012 the question "does anyone have a charger with them?" will be dead and buried. I had it easy with Nokia (as all the company phones are the same, and they generously gave a converter when they changed connector size), but generally it's all a bit shit right now.

Cube Engine

A possibly cool game engine where people have made cool indie games. Might be worth a blast for FishCon.

Dalek Chrimbo Tree

I want one. It's so gay.

Dashboard widget

Fantastically cool looking dashboard with loads of stuff you don't need to know. Even if you don't use Sprint, you have to appreciate this bit of Flash web fun.

Death by caffeine

An essential reference. Simply enter your bodyweight and select your favourite awake juice and this will let you know roughly how much you would need for a lethal dose.

Apparently I should avoid drinking over 288 cups of tea in any one session...

Delivery of Nether for Evil Inc. Del date unknown.. :(

Notch is enabling the Nether in 1.6!! God knows when that'll be released!

Demetri Martin - stand up comic genius

This sort of stuff really appeals to me. Lots of one-liners and thoughts, plays on language and some oddness. it's a gentle sort of comedy...

Design flaws in Star Wars

Oooh, that rhymes. A list of things we've all thought or felt in the past but didn't want to point out. It's our childhood GODDAMIT!

Fantastic Steampunk Art

Loving it. Loving it all.

Fast food employee application prank

Maybe they shouldn't leave those forms out in the open...

First amino acid found on a comet

Amino acids form the building blocks of cells, so it is possible that life on earth came from space. This does two things:

1. Means that life across the galaxy is more likely.
2. Means that life might have come from the explosion of some mega planet where an ancient civilisation ruled...

First Android phone by T-Mobile

Looks very snacky but I'd need to see it and play with it. Never buy the first version of anything.

Specs:
phone is 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 inches,
weighs 5.6 ounces,
features a 480 x 320 HVGA display,
sports 3G (obviously),
GPS,
has a 3.1-megapixel camera,
supports up to 8GB of memory (though no format is mentioned),

Firsts in PC Hardware

Some cool piccies of the very first things to do with PC hardare, like the first portable computer etc.

Fish's computer weighs 6 Megatonnes and here's why

A lovely little article. The replies are hilarious.

Flash and java experiments

Some are rather cool. Mostly mathematical based but I like them.

Font Fail

A classic moment of font fail.

For those who like to customise their desktop new Rainmeter

I don't use it at the moment but I will be when I get home!

We'll all have to wait for the crash investigation. A sad day. Grob Tutors, not the ones I fly.

Galden Pages in spate of honesty shocker

A classic.

Genetic Algorithm Running in Flash

A GA to evolve a car. Love it.

See, Flash is a proper programming language.

Gentlemanly Street-Fighting

It's most unsporting to spill a chaps hat on the floor in such a way...prepare to defend yourself from my stick, you young ruffian! Avast!

GMail gets skins

If you're not using GMail now, there's something wrong with you.

God listens

Yes he does. He really does.

Google forced to make latitude a web App on the iPhone

Latitude, on most mobile devices, is rather cool. It shows you where you and your friends are locally. On most devices, it's a native app and can run in the background. On the iPhone, Apple have demanded that it's a web app, meaning that it must be the primary running application, rather than a background app.

Google Wave

Google Wave is a yet-to-be-released collaborative tool. It's so broad, it's difficult to describe but it's Google's vision to how email should be but it goes so much further than that. Four people editing a document concurrently and you see the edits. Emails that are really somewhere between and email and IM, with branching and joining new people in.

Govern it? Why put it in there in the first place...

A book that really should not exist.

Gower to Reading in 4½ minutes

Here's the timelapse from todays run back from Gower... comically as the journey went on the netbook struggled more and more, reducing the frame rate of the image capture, resulting in a faster and faster virtual journey... We whip through Burghfield at about Mach 5!

Greenpeace to stop technology that doesn't exist yet

You know that good idea you've had? Perpetual motion machine or free energy source? Greenpeace are against it. They're against it because ... well, because they're Greenpeace. I think GP should stick to stopping whaleling and protecting the environment from industrial waste rather than chasing down science that hasn't come to fruition.

Half Life 2 in Lego

Some nice pics here.

Harry Potter vs Star Wars

Of course, both stories really just a hero's journey, the oldest format of a story ever but tittersome nonetheless.

Heavy Metal Band Name Taxonomy

Find out how Heavy Metal band names are created and clustered!

(for fun, natch)

Help me pick a name for my new Icar car

I needed a 'posh' car, a sort of Lexus or Merc level for Icar as the chaps kept stealing them. This is the first pass at the model (there will be a another version). Any thoughts for a name for it?

I was thinking along the lines of Regal but that sounds like a filthy cinema/bingo hall in the north.

Hot dog Stand, the most insane windows theme ever

Did you ever set 3.1 to use it? I know I did. Brings back memories.

How to confuse the fuck out of a sport...

So, in summary we have;

1) One system to determine the top position, and another entirely for everyone else
2) A 2-tier team system, where teams are either on a budget, but technically freer to do what they want, or spend shedloads of money, but not allowed to do lots of things to their car.

Indiana Jones Story Conference

Lucas, Spielberg and a writer sit in a room for 9 hours a day for 5 days and discuss the story for Indiana Jones. Fascinating stuff.

International Olympic Committee has trademarked a line from the Canadian national anthem

Who ever knew that the people that organise the Olympics were ridiculous wankers? You can't trademark the whole language, dumfux!

It's time for another Good Idea, Bad Idea

Good Idea... Commission a new series of Futurama

Bad Idea...Recast all the voice actors...

Javascript online editor/debugger

Tide is a really cool tool for editing/testing and running javascript on a browser. Easy to edit, to run, step and so on. Doesn't quite beat Firebug and the like but it a cool tool when your chips are down.

Knitted shark attack hat

Need! Right up there with Simpson's head crab hat.

L4D opens up Mod tools

I'd rather work on SPP but this is good news. I am sure better modders than us will make some cool places.

Left 4 Dead 2 announced

Timestamp of 19:10:53

Hordes of zombies now, and a group of normal people fending them off with axes and chainsaws anf frying pans. Yes, Left for Dead 2 - coming 17th November.

I can't see us playing this at all...

Left 4 Dead Downloadable Content coming free to PC and XBox 360

Lovely chaps at Valve. I can almost forgive them for Steam.

Lego Universe - It's the only MMO I will probably play

Sod Second Life. Sod WoW. This is a real MMO. Including pirates and ninjas.

Lifehacker interview with the man behind GMail

Some interesting stuff about how it is run, when it's coming out of beta and stuff.

Loads of fantastic CSS jiggery pokery

For budding web developers out there, here's a superb list of fab CSS techniques.

Love Gameplay video

Breathtaking stuff. Might actually make me play an MMO.

Lucy Knisley's Zombie Cartoon Poster

A really cool where's Wally like cartoon of the Zombiepocalypse.

Microsoft's Vision for 2019

At the Wharton Business Technology Conference yesterday, Microsoft's Business Division president Stephen Elop revealed Microsoft's Office Labs "2019" video.

Million Dollar PC.com - gallery of beautiful boxes.

Not actuall million dollar systems. Just look that way.

Monty Python gets its own YouTube Channel

And it's official! I've just had... an... accident.

More things Francis hates

I hate vans.

Mozilla Bespin - online code editing

Not yet given it a big try but what they're trying to do it superb. Only does HTML/CSS/JS at the moment but who knows what comes next... It's Mozilla, so it's open source and plugin-able.

One to watch.

Multiple Kill Vehicle is straight out of a computer game

Missile interception has never looked so scarey. You could clear a room with it too.

My Dad's current project

Not a surprise for anyone who knows my family but here is my Dad's current project: a motor home/camper van. It'll be all mod cons and he's doing everything himself. He's taught himself XHTML/CSS and only had the minimal amount of help (use 34sp, use Filezilla is all I said) everything else is his and he's done jolly well!

Mysterious Mima mounds

Weird, regular earthworks that appear all over the planet. Odd odd odd.

Next L4D Update provide Add-On support

This is a goody. A few months ago, they released the SDK in an open beta and people have been making mods etc for L4D. Well, now they have put up an interface to help you play them - and get your mates all playing the same one. Looks like it fits neatly into the same Campaign/etc framework. Super.

NSFW-Ish RPG Motivational Posters

Some are prolly NSFW but the page I've linked is a contact sheet, so you can't see anything.

Appropriate:

Nuclear Subs collide

Well, they must have been running silent, naturally.

nVidia GeForce 250: not what it seems

nVidia have just released a "new" card, the GeForce 250.

Most people would expect this to be a slower/slightly cut down version of their current line (260, 280, 285, 295) but beware. Its not. It is simply a 9800GTX+ with a new name pasted to the side.

Obama is a Jedi

This will become the most photoshopped picture ever.

Operation Flashpoint Multiplayer

Worth upgrading me PC for. Looks like a right chuckle.

OTT Mods to weapons

Looks like the sorts of things Icar players do.

Patrick McGoohan dies at 80

He was best known as the writer, director and star of The Prisoner, and also won awards for his work on Columbo.

Apparently the BBC are remaking The Prisoner this year, hopefully without breaking it utterly...

Pay what you like for Champ Manager

It's like Radiohead's In Rainbow's - apart from the £2.50 processing charge, you pay only what you want for Champ Manager. I know there are some fans on here but even non-fans must be impressed by that bullish pricing model!

Picasa adds collaboration

Picasa has a new feature that allows you to share an album with friends, so you can all upload to a single place. If you're going to Cons and the like, it might be cool to put all the photos in a single place. Nothing earth shattering but a cool feature nonetheless.

Piston minecart boosers

Little vid of a piston boosted minecart system. I think the official pistons may work differently as this is a player made mod.

Popular games painted like Matisse

I really love the Megaton one from F3. There should be a few most of us recognise!

Prank Caller Hits Jackpot

In a way I feel sorry for the guy who made the call. He's peaked now, everything after this is going to seem like an anti-climax...

Print on demand board/card games

Interesting looking service for creating your own board games or card games.

Road Legal Formula One

Very cool looking car. Anyone got £500,000 going spare?

Rob and Fish bought APB, ... oops

What had such promise ... might just be broken.

Rob wrote an RPG in 24 Hours. Read how it happened.

I started at 20:00 after a long day at work. Picked a topic from the list and ploughed in. I always planned to get some sleep in. I can't do an Aggro and still be creative. I am glad I did.

Rome in HDRI

Some beautiful pictures. HDRI tends to bring out the detail in a scene and the roman architecture looks simply superb with all the detail highlighted. Smashing stuff.

RPS Play some Air Buccaneers

Ah, joyous delight! The Air Buccs come to RPS.

Scientists Reconsider what they think they know about autism

An interesting article about some new ideas on autism and autistics who are using modern technology to speak out about common media perceptions that they are mentally retarded and locked in a world of their own. People challenging the commonly held believe that autism is disease and the people with it have damaged brains when in reality they may just have architecturally different brains.

Settlers of Catan coming for the iPhone

Pete still won't win.

Shaun of the Left 4 Dead

One of the user-created packs for Left 4 Dead will a Shaun of the Dead tribute - which is Left 4 Winchester - a run to the pub. Classic.

Some L4D survival mode details from the horse's mouth

Seems like they spent time tuning survival mode...

Songs in Code

A twitter phenomenon (#songsincode). Post your favourites. Here are some of my faves:

if( $you->cantTouchThis() ) { $hammer_time = TRUE; }

RT @zeldman .clowns{float:left;}.jokers{float:right};#me_you{position:fixed;margin:0 auto;width:100%}

RT @sensatlandsend: (count($problems) == 99) && (!in_array('bitch', $problems))

Space Hulk is back

Cue Pete frothing at the face-gash.

Space Hulk Rumours...

...and as of now it is just rumours.

It would be very much against Games Workshop's current model, and several issues have been raised;

1) Cost - to price the minatures for the original set would be over £100 in todays money (even with plastics)
2) Genestealers have been changed out of sight in the 40K universe, and are now just lackeys to the Tyranids

Spore addon Galactic Adventures on Rock Paper Shotgun

I know Spore wasn't everyone's cup of tea but I think this new expansion will reinvigorate it for me. :) I hope they improve the management of many colonies because it was annoying having to jet back across the void to cure some sort of disease - even when you've tooled up the planet with all the disease killing stuff.

Spore expansion coming...

I loved Spore but the end game was somewhat tiresome. Sounds like they've listened to the community and now they're rectifying it!

Of course, it might just miss the mark like the original game did for many.

Spotted Dick back on the menu

A council renamed Spotted Dick to Spotted Richard but changed it back after people complained. Fucking wankers.

Steam to start hosting mods

I've been downloading a few HL2 mods recently (for the impending Con) and there are some crackers out there. Now Steam is going to start hosting them, that's Win for everyone.

Steampunk Space Helmet

I love the top hat inside the glass. Very important to be smarly dressed on Mars.

Steampunk Star Trek wallpapers

Your favourite characters in steampunk loveliness!

Stewart Francis - One Liners

Shouldn't be funny really...

Street art - turning a street into a river

Love the painting and also love what people are doing with it!

Stunning Data Visualisation

I love this sort of stuff.

Synergy: share one mouse and keyboard between networked machines

If you might need this you've probably heard of it, but just in case...

Synergy is a bit like a KVM, but works in software over a network connection. Once logged in, you can move your mouse to the edge of the screen of one machine and have it appear on the next, taking keyboard control to it too and even your clipboard contents.

Teens capture near-space earth images with home made balloon

This rocks. They spend about 60 quid, and send a camera nearly into space. And they're all pre-uni science students.

Nice!

Texans working on pulseless artificial heart

(yeah, I know its old, I just saw it)

Apparently there's a constant flow heart under development - interesting stuff. Should put less of a load on the circulatory system given the lack of pressure pulses, although as pointed out in the article having it respond to the body's demands could be challenging

Best bit has to be one of the comments:

"No pulse?

That person you met online...

Really, really grim apartment. Check out the keyboard. This person doesn't use numbers, punctuation or the letter Q.

Be warned...

The best Facebook app ever

Decent viral marketing for once...

The customer is not always right

Site with stories of customer stupidity from the retail industry.

I particularly like this and this.

The End is Nigh

Wogan is giving in the Eurovision. This certainly was one of the signs of the apolcalypse...

The first thing you should consider post kidnapping...

And I guess you should call the police or something too...

The Free RPG Blog

I've been collecting free RPG stuff for ages now. Ever since Rob Barrows epic 'Entalis' disappeared from the net, I've been downloading free RPGs and sticking them in a folder on my computer. Yags, Jags, Fudge, Fate and so on. I also do a lot of egosurfing for Icar, that is putting "Icar rpg" into Google and seeing who is linking to it and what people are saying.

The Last Remnant

Apparently, Square Enix have a new xbox RPG coming out in a scant 10 days, which I knew nothing about. It looks pretty impressive though - I'll probably have to pick it up, even if I've still got weeks (if not months) left of Lost Odyssey.

The Palestinian Archipelago

Interesting map where the creator has taken Palestine/Israel and replced all the bits of Israel with water. Simply to show the fragmentation of Palestine, nothing more.

The perfect gift...

SFW thanks to blurring ;)

The unfortunate sex life of a banana

Did you know that bananas are evolutionary dead ends? I didn't!

The warmth of a Tauntaun

I want a sleeping bag like this.

This is for Cameron, who doesn't think he's seen anything special today...

Probably responsible for half the films you don't admit to liking, but still quote all the time anyway.

  • Weird Science

  • Ferris Buellers Day Off
  • Planes, Trains and Automobiles
  • Breakfast Club
  • Uncle Buck

Tony Hart dies at 83

A good innings. His programs made great viewing. Morph is something that is deeply imbedded in everyone's consciousness.

Unexpected Honesty

Well, at lest he was nice about it...

Up and coming Sci Fi films for 2009

Looks like a bumper year for Sci Fi. Hurrah!

Urban Decay photography

Some beautiful pics, some beautifully fitting for those enraptured with Fallout 3 at the mo.

Very in depth article on LCD monitors

Yes, its more than a year old, but this is an incredibly in depth look at some of the performace aspects of LCDs compared to others and to traditional CRT monitors, and what things are relevant given human Mk.1 eyeballs, including:

- Why very fast grey to grey response times have surprisingly little real world effect

Video: Wagglemax Zombocalypse Survival Kit

Warren Buffet

The man is a financal genius. $5bn invested with a 10% return with the option to make even more money based on share assests.

In addition the option to buy $5bn of shares at $115 current value $125 and you can bet if he chooses to cash in the value will rise considerably. There is risk involved Goldman Sachs chould slump but even if they did they'd still have to pay his 10%.

Well done that lad!

That shows a high degree of initiative, and deservingly gets a BBC News page all to himself with a photo of the glorious artifact...

What Mark Gasson is up to...

An old mate of mine from Uni some of you might remember. He made this.

What they're going to do to the centre of Reading

Nice one, Reading!

White and Nerdy

Just for the fun of posting it.

Win7 - do I need Pro? Perhaps not.

Been thinking about PC upgrades and Win 7 is definitely the way to go. Home Premium is only £70 on Amazon.

Win7 not to have IE when shipped in Europe

Another reason to...

1. Think about Win 7
2. Like Europe.

Windows 7 put up against Vista and XP in hardcore multicore benchmarks, XP wins

Just the title alone is great. Sadly, XP still doesn't (and won't ever) have DX10, so not great for gamers. :(

Your next fav band

For last fm users, it does some statistical crunching on your last.fm account and gives you a list of cool bands you might like. Nice!

Youth Hostel in a Jumbo Jet

Seems like a good idea to me. I'd sleep there.

YouTube BBC Mitchell and Webb do costume drama

This had me laughing my buttocks off last night. See it through to the end.

[Reading] Reading south exchange fuckedupitude

Looks like at least some of the problems I'm having with my internet connection aren't at my end...

[Tilt Shift] Bathtub IV

If you've not seen tilt shift before, its a cool technique where you set the focus to make pictures (and video here) look like it's a model railway and such. This one is a delightful example of tilt shift.

[video] For when you feel a bit stabby...

[YT] Haka vs Warcry

There should be some global law that all countries have some kind of kick-ass war dance... Sort of makes our National Anthem look a little weedy.

[YT] L4D Teletubbies mod. Truly. Fucking. Terrifying.

There is no need for this shit.

[YT] L4D Things Francis (Beefcake) hates into a dance remix

When I found this, I realised that all Franny-knickers, our favourite beefcake hates everything and complains about it all the time. Until point ed out, I would not have known.
