What are you using it for?
Which motherboard precisely are you getting and what CPU cooler are going for?

8GB of RAM seems excessive atm. I have 4GB in mine and can successfully run a 1GB RAM Virtual Machine AND... Word, Excel, Outlook, Lightwave (while rendering), Firefox (that takes 200MB), Steam downloading and a number of sundries.

The SSDs are madly expensive.

the SSD is £200 I've

the SSD is £200

I've managed to max out my current Ram, which is 4GB on my current system before, so wanting to up it a bit. Could take it down to 6GB.

Going to be using for Work, Gaming and watching Films. Video editing and encoding will happen from time to time.

Trying to future proof it a bit, so it should last a while.

Motherboard, Case and fan come pre-assembled. Trying to find which exact motherboard is supplied now.

Ram is cheap and I would like 10GB or more. Doing stuff like 3D or video editing it's always better to have a lot.

Hi Mark, and Happy New

Hi Mark, and Happy New Year.

Looks like a reasonable board to me. Although I'd be careful if you plan to overclock

I think the i5 750 is a good choice not worth the premium to go up to the i7, and as you're going with discrete graphics no need to sacrifice two cores for integrated graphics (although I do like the look of the clarkdale (i5 6xx) for non-main machine purposes).

The Kingston SSD is another good choice - its the only third party SSD to be based on Intel's controller, which is very good, and it has trim support, so it won't slow down much as it fills up (unlike early SSDs). 128Gb sounds a good size, although it depends how many applications you want to fit on it really.

Ram-wise, I agree with Aserash and yourself would probably go with 8gb if I were buying now... you can't practically add any more to the board at the moment. I'm not sure if it'll make much odds outside of big file stuff, but it could make a difference with video encoding. Remember when you're first installing to only install 4gb in slots 2 and 4 though. I'd add the rest post windows install...

As for graphics, I'd be fairly tempted to switch to an ATi 5870, which is at the same price point and has notably better performance

Thanks Andy, Hope you had a good Christmas?

I don't overclock, never have done. At the moment my programs and Windows occupy 63GB, so pretty much half of the SSD would be used. out of the box so to speak.

the ATi is £100 more as far as I can see, so can't really see myself heading towards getting that one. How does the ATi Radeon 5850 compare?

Thanks for the link regarding the RAM, probably would have been pulling my hair out at that one!

Was planning on setting it up with the SSD and then adding the drives for data post windows/programs install, is that the best route??

As a side note, your ATC Service expires 11th Jan

Looking online, the ATi

Looking online, the ATi Radeon 5850 is slightly better than the GeForce GTX 285
Plus the ATi is DirectX11 compatible, where as the GeForce GTX is only DirectX10 compatible.

Anyone know anything to disagree?

I agree entirely. Get a Dx11

I agree entirely. Get a Dx11 card now and it'll be good for 2 years.

Sorry 'bout the

Sorry 'bout the delay.

You're absolutely right - I had completely the wrong card for some reason. The 7850 is supposed to be faster than the 285 and had DX11, so I would definately lean in that direction.

On the Cadets front, recently had my London work extended yet again, and even when in Reading I'm usually quite late. Just can't make it on even a semi-regular basis.

Will be dropping an email to staff sometime this weekend apologising and to arrange return of kit.
