Just watched the first few vids during lunch (they are on the ultimate package) and they are really very good. I think we might all need to watch them, somehow (talk about that elsewhere). Any idiot can make levels and stuff given the step-by-step attitude they take. They really do leave nothing out. Lightwave users among us might find some bits blindingly obvious but there are a few paradigm shifts that are well worth noting.
I've only watched the first few but they are brilliant and now I'm gagging to give a few things a go.
**Update**
Can't see to add another comment onto this thread! So, here's my reply:
There's quite a lot of them and I can't really keep my computer on day and night like I used to. I'll start a topic elsewhere...
I had a go at following them last night. They are excellent. I made a level in about an hour, got to grips with all the subtractiveness and think I could probably design a pretty good level from scratch with the knowledge I got from a single evening. The level is pretty simple but the tutorials point out big pitfalls and explain concepts (such as invalidating the lighting solution) really well. Testing levels is easy as pie too, you just right click anywhere and select Run from here... then you're in the game! Brilliant.

What sort of size are they,
What sort of size are they, Maybe we can share them on qnext?
I've just watched the first
I've just watched the first 3 of these, that go through the very basics of level creation (room creation, static meshes and lighting). They are actually very good...even I understood it. The only time I'd opened up the editor before I'd been scared off my the multiple windows, so the way they worked in a single window was a lot more user-friendly...
I'll try and get through some of the others over the holiday...
I'm glad you got through it
I'm glad you got through it alright. I see you as a bit of an acid test, having never played with much 3D stuff before. Having said that, you do have to 'unlearn' a fair amount of 3D first. I think all the tutorials are up to standard of the first one.
I'm upto the overview of
I'm upto the overview of Matinee now, which is probably the only part that I have some previous experience in, as its the keyframe animation (ala Flash). I'm hoping that its integration with Kismet is similar to the Flash/Actionscript relationship as well...
The 3D stuff wasn't too bad. I'm obviously not even going to think about creating static meshes. The materials section was all new to me, and while I was hoping its an area I didn't need to know (it sounded all arty) once they went through the animation sections of it I realised that I'd at least need to have an understanding of it... I am beginning to realise just how much 20+ hours of video tutorial actually is, and I haven't even been working alongside it, just watching them (I've had a few fiddles in the editor to create very basic levels to make sure I understood some of the early sections...).That said, the quality and understandability to the tutorials is excellent, and theres never been a point where I've heard something and thought "that just doesn't make sense..."
Still going through these, I
Still going through these, I think I'm just over halfway now. Currently in the middle of the particle effects system. Still utterly impressed with the quality and level of detail of them.
My plan is once I've got through the lot I will try and make a Deathmatch level, and try and put some of the lessons into practice. I really wish I had a dual-screen setup right now, as I can really see where the real estate would be useful, having the multiple windows of the editor up at the same time.
I should really try and get
I should really try and get hold of these at some point
Remind me before the next
Remind me before the next Descent session, and I'll slap them on a DVD.
Speaking of which...Descent session? It would be nice to fit in one or two before the Badgers vanish round the world...
I managed to grab a copy of
I managed to grab a copy of them off of Byrn on saturday.
A decent session would be nice we have about 8 weeks before we are off so we might be able to squeeze something in before then.
