[BF2142] Post your rank - the return

Just got to Sergeant Major of the Army.

Not entirely sure what to take my upgrade on. I'm trying to improve my play as recon. My choices are the Better sniper rifle (Zeller) or detpacks...

I'm Captain Gold Havn't

I'm Captain Gold

Havn't played for quite a while been distracted by other games, you playing regualrly?

Go det packs next.

Not really mate, just felt like something online FPSish and have been playing a bit.

Have indeed gone for detpacks ;)

Wow, Catpain Fish... that's a lot of points mate

Still a 1st Lieutenant. Got

Still a 1st Lieutenant. Got distracted too. But keen to get back on now.

Played a bit more last

Played a bit more last night, mainly as recon. I was trying to get the recon bronze (12 kills in a round)

I'm finding it very hard to be effective. I started off in titan mode, mainly defending silos. I think my aim with the main rifle has improved, but I still miss a hell of a lot. I got a few people with claymores, and a couple of vehicles after detpacking around the silo, but I'm scoring 10ish points a round at best...

Tried some titan attack. 2 and 4 were needed. Went and had myself painted on the walls in the entrance several times. Had a bit of a minigame with another, defending, recon who was leaving claymores in the drop-in entry point. Left some pointing the other way for him. Very entertaining.

Eventually someone splatted the defenders and we ran up. By the time I was halfway down the corridor he'd blown the terminal. A defender turned up and shot me while I was changing weapon.

A bit of assault on the reactor core. We never got in the door, but many grenades were thrown.

At one point earlier after a wave of vehicles turned up I spawned as engineer. I got more points in that life than in the rest of the map as recon.

OK I think, so titan mode isn't working for me, at least tonight. I'll try conquest. More heads to shoot surely?

After a map or two I gave up. I was dying very quickly, usually without getting a shot off. Most of my kills were with claymores, but there were very few of them.

I suspect I am doing many things wrong...

Pete's excellent Recon

Pete's excellent Recon tactic is on defense. Endlessly set claymores on the entry points and run around with the automatic rifle upgrade. He was lethal like that. I think you're doing it right, it's just really difficult to be a good Recon. Definitely the hardest class.

With recon play high player

With recon play high player count games

If your going to snipe do it from along way away, pick a control point that gets alot of action. If I'm sniping with the Zeller I'll often be so far away that players are outside of the draw distance if your not scoped (thats on highest graphic settings.) Obviously this is map dependant, some are too busy for that long a line of site.

Don't try and shoot a moving target unless it is headon. If the movement is perpendicular you rarely hit. Be patient and wait for them to stop, go for the head shot. With the small mag and the gap between shots if you don't kill them with the first shot then they'll hide.

I quite like to start at the home base and load the front of a jeep up with det packs. Bomb around till you see an enemy vehicle drive straight at it and bail out. As the jeep rolls up close set it off. Will kill any vehicle.

If your passing an friendly control point drop some det packs round it and fuck off. If you can keep an eye on who has control as soon as it turns grey you know there are enemy there set off the packs. Similarly if you are sniping from a distance then dump your APM at control points, someone will turn up eventually.

Last time I played the vehicle mines weren't getting deployed much but you can set them off with the Zeller. This can turn enemy mines against them.

Once the titans are

Once the titans are available

If your on Titan attack or defence swap to heavy armour, you don't need to run that far.

You can snipe in the two lower corridors from a long way in defence but the enemy have to be going for it for you to pick up the kills.
To increase your chance of kills it can be worth dropping apm on onside and snping the other. If you jump you can attach det packs to the corridor ceilings, they are more subtle. Do a line of 5 and hope a group of enemy charge in.

I got my explosive gold and 30 kills by using the lambert and heavy armour and standing on top of the titans. Pick where the action is home or away and get up to the level where at AA guns are. Drop apms at the corners as alot of people pod to that top section. Watch for pods coming in and catch the enemy in that moment of confusion as the pod opens up. Watch for people dropping sniper kits as it is a way for you to restock apm.

I've never had much success as a sniper assulting the enemy terminals. Leave that to assaults to revive each other.

In general your not likely

In general your not likely to get massive kill counts from sniping as you have to be patient and wait for the action to happen in your scope. You get your points from infiltrator pins and kill streaks. Then definately move up to the titans as you get the attacker defender bonus plus the bonus at 8? kills.

Hm. Nots sure about the error... maybe it was a max no. posts in a given time?

Thanks for the info mate. I'll have to try that out. As engineer I tend to play low to middling player games, which might be part of the problem. I tried high player conquest, but it was just silly...

Not such a fan of conquest

Not such a fan of conquest either. Doesn't lend it self to sniping as the area that the action takes place is too fluid. The control points give you targets. On a map with lots of towers counter sniping is normally good for a few kills too.

Cheers Mr. Fish. Played a

Cheers Mr. Fish. Played a bit tonight, and stayed in for "one last round".

Up till then I'd get a few kills here and there, had 10-15 a couple of times, had some scores as low as 5.

Then, in the last round (Suez titan with 40+ people, team damage off... handy.) I managed to get a couple of dropships with three people at silos, a few more individuals here and there, and even one "oh shit oh shit oh shit" kill with the pistol. Shields were critical just as someone ran me over (handy) so I moved upstairs, sprinkling claymores and detpacks into corridor 1 (while I was spawning they rushed 2 and 4).

Got a few down there, but then six people were there grenade spamming. I reckoned they didn't need my services really so I assumed they would eventually fail and went upstairs to set up in 3. Unfortunately while there were plenty of people defending our titan and attacking theirs (got into the core but were repulsed by the look of it) we neglected the silos and were evenetually missiled to death.

That said, I got 15 kills, getting me the basic recon badge, explosives pin and bronze explosives badge. If that kill with the handgun had been another explosives I think I'd have explosives silver too... naturally as they are bronzre badges they're not worth much, but I feel like I can actually play recon as a class, not a chore. Sometimes. On titan maps. ;)

Must remember to turn my graphics fdown. 16x12 is fine if its quietlow players, but during grenade spamming its clunky. Not that waiting for someone to appear and pressing a button needs a great frame rate :D

Nice, Byrn. I dropped you

Nice, Byrn. I dropped you off at about 23:30, looks like you spend a good couple of hours on that one last round! :-)

Maybe it was more than

Maybe it was more than one... compare with "one more turn" in Civ ;)

Took the Zeller as my unlock. Played mainly recon while getting to here, occasional stints back as engineer when there were a lot of vehicles on a map.

I have a question for the other recons out there... do you use the stabiliser, or do I need to work on my aim? Maybe its the servers I'm playing on, but very few people seem to stand or even lie still while capping a silo these days, and although they sometimes do run towards or away from you, it doesn't happen that often...

The reason I ask is that changing to the Zeller has been good and bad. The damage is slightly higher, which is good, but the clip size of 3 has messed up my usual sniping tactic which used to go:

1. Try and take my time to get a headshot.
2. Miss.
3. Plink away at them in general as they scurry around looking for me.

(2 is not exactly intentional. I blame my mouse :( )

With the basic rifle, I would sometimes get enough body shots on a person to take them down even once I've blown the headshot oppotunity. With the Zeller I might get lucky in two more shots, but if I don't its a reload (3 round clip), which takes a long time. Its very rare for them to still be in the area when I scope back in...

Nice Byrn, well done! :-) I

Nice Byrn, well done! :-) I have no idea about the Recon stuff cos I am Assault through and through.

Cheers mate. I'd be the

Cheers mate. I'd be the same with Assault to be honest... barely played it at all. I did try picking up someones stuff a few times. Rockets are pretty nifty...

I've never used the

I've never used the stabaliser so can't actually comment. I've been unwilling to give up the det packs and apm. Had very little experience with camo pants too.

Just noticed you havn't got

Just noticed you havn't got the carbine yet. I was very sceptical of it for a long time as I thought I should be sniping but when I did decide to use it it transformed the game when it moved to on titan fighting. I guess your just waiting on the unlocks.

Have you hoovered up the free unlocks in Northern Strike? You can keep working on your points but familiarise yourself with the conditions for the free unlocks and you should pick up the carbine quite quickly.

I'm with Fish on the

I'm with Fish on the Carbine. It helped me get the Recon badge and makes you deadly on Titan defense. Pete guided me onto it.

Thanks Mr. Fish. Much like

Thanks Mr. Fish. Much like yourself, I can't imagine carrying less explosives than I'm allowed to.

Yep, just waiting. I've not got all of the northern strike freebies, mainly as all the servers running NS these days are doing assault lines.... which I find in no way fun. I will push for them at some point (need 14 kills and more time in NS vehicles), but only when I have enough time to play NS for a bit, get to the point I'm sick of it and play some titan, maybe on Suez. If I just play NS there's a chance I'll be so pissed off I'll just not play the game for months...

The carbine does look good. I've looted it a couple of times, but the bastards on my team keep going and winning before I get chance to use it on anyone...

2nd Lieutenant Silver. Good

2nd Lieutenant Silver. Good Conduct Ribbon did the trick there.

Even had a bit of teamplay with the Fish, which was much more fun than just playing. I was having loads of connection problems all day, though. I hope this is not a 1.4 problem.

Major Silver Only played for

Major Silver

Only played for a bit tonight but I also had lots of connection problems and instability in game. Had to reinstall just to get 1.4 to work (Standard EA patch)

What did you think of

What did you think of Highway Tampa?

I liked it, all the other maps seem really small after playing it. Tank battles on the other maps seem a little bit crushed in and you don't get to use the long range barrage of the tank so well - defying the point of the tank.

Just curious: why did you keep making me Squad Leader? Not that I don't like it but it seemed a funny thing to do!

It wasn't intentional. I was

It wasn't intentional. I was having endless connection problems and the game was crashing on me so I had to keep reloading. That was making you squad leader by default as I exited.

I liked Highway too. Havn't played the whole map yet as it is large but the bottom half seemed pretty good. I think it seems large because there is less terrain/buildings between the control points than on other maps making it look very open.

Nice, good to hear you

Nice, good to hear you haveing a go again :D

I quite like Highway Tampa. Its a good land vehicle map, which makes Recon hard to play in a way... there are places that you can see two control points from, but not at elevation and a lot of people cap in vehicles.

This makes it an ideal engineer map IMO, until (obviously) the titan shields are down. At that point I either change class or carry on grabbing silos as engineer.

Its damn good in a tank. As Rob says, its rare to actually get to use the tank well, especially versus walkers. They're supposed to be an even match, with walker better close in and tank better at extreme range, but most maps that just means the walkers win...

2nd Lieutenant Gold. I had a

2nd Lieutenant Gold.

I had a mental game last night. I healed like mad and got the "Medic Excellence Badge", I then ran out of ammo in the middle of enemy territory and got the pistol pin thing. Been getting a lot of Northern Strike down me.

Nice one mate. Titan or

Nice one mate. Titan or Assault lines?

Assault lines, actually. How

Assault lines, actually. How odd! I am not sure I got the points for the Medic Excellence Badge. I pretty much fought through 1300 points at 30/40 at a time to get to gold.

I also tried being engineer now that I'm pilum'd up and have motion mines. It's pretty good, actually. The SMG is handy and the Pilum is cool too. Need a bit more practise at hitting the shield weak points on the Goliath.

Ah, Assault lines. Never

Ah, Assault lines. Never really got on with it too well.

Sounds good mate, in a very real way the Engineer is an anti-vehicle recon. Some of the best kills (most satisfying) I ever got were a case of not taking the shot and waiting for the vulnrable side to become available...

Motion mines are great things. I tend to leave them in one clump of 3-5 near the entrance to a cp, or tucked under something near where transports are landing to cap. Very very effective.

Captain Silver and Gold.

Captain Silver and Gold. Thanks mostly to Fish finding a knife-fighting server and getting the dog-tag collector silver and gold in a single afternoon. Not to mention the collector's pin a few times. I actually got 1767 career points on one round!

It was a great laugh playing with Fish on the servers. I think we need to get voice chat going, though. Typing isn't an option as the messages scroll too fast.

I picked up about 5000

I picked up about 5000 points this weekend getting to Lieutenant Colonel Gold.

Voice coms would be good but I only have a desktop usb mic which I'm not sure is practical. May need to buy one. Is there anything to recommend usb over headphone jack or vice versa?

The knife servers are bit weird, strangely quiet. Looks like you were picking up the massive normal score as well, I was getting about 160-170 before the big medals came in.

Did a pistol/knife server as well to grab the silver handgun. They are a good laugh, am tempted to play enough rounds for the gold.

5000 in a weekend! Bloody

5000 in a weekend! Bloody hell!

Pistol/Kinfe was a good chuckle too. It takes a certain skill to be good at killing with a pistol. You can also rack up loads of points being a medic there too.

I don't think there is any difference between the standard mic and a USB one. I have a Steelsound headset thing with a mic that Alex bought be for a birthday. It's the dogs nads but you don't really need that. When I used to play BFV with Gameaction Clan, I used a simple Logitech mic headset thing. It wasn't expensive and did the job. In fact it seems to be sodding cheapo!. I'd recommend it. Mine only broke when I trod on it. With my current headset, doing that would break my ankle.

I meant to add that I am

I meant to add that I am working up the support right hand branch to get to the shotgun. I picked it up off your corpse when we were titan defending on the roof and it rocked. After that, it's time to get snipering for a bit, I think.

I've unlocked the first

I've unlocked the first eight on all the four classes, I waited till I had enough unlocks before switching class so I started out maxed. The shot gun on the titan is awesome. On the round we did titan defense when it was hectic I scored 160ish just through points and pins. Shotgun has the close combat pin worth 10 for 10 kills along with combat efficiency pins and titan defender pins it really racked up. The infantry sonar seems to be handy which is a NS unlock on Support and worth getting as support lacks two strong backup slots in the basic list. Basically I'm after clocking up some support hours to get the silver badges on that, I think I'm after the golds on assult after that.

I have my new headphones

I have my new headphones with mic. Do you use teams speak or the built in coms? How does it all work, I've never used them before?

I've used the in game comms

I've used the in game comms for BF2142 and TS for BFV (there's no team chat). TS is pretty good but it's better to use the in game chat for 2142 so that the rest of the squad can hear you. You need to bind a key to "Squad Chat" or "Squad command" or something. I know it's not obvious. Bind it to something handy so you can chat to others. Then a marker on the right hand side of the screen will show up when you're transmitting. You can see who is speaking when a maker with their name pops up.
