Right! Let's start talking games. Just to reiterate the needs:
1. Needs to run on the most basic rig. (Is L4D2 the lower limit standard now?)
2. Needs to be LANable (activation ok over 3G but no big downloads or server connections)
3. Cheap-ass if no-one has it
Steam are having a super big sale, so let's use that for inspiration.
FINAL LIST!
L4D
L4D2
Dawn of War AND ALL EXPANSIONS!
UT3 - must be legit copy

I could run a high-speed
I could run a high-speed Chom Isis server - updates every 15 minutes - start with 4 pawns - no pawns in the Auction. Thoughts?
Not sure about Chom.... I've
Not sure about Chom.... I've never really got to grips with the new system, however it could be interesting to see how it plays out over a weekend.
Agree with the 3 so far, as everyone who has logged onto Steam in the past few months will be able to vouch for I've been playing a lot of L4D2. As for other suggestions...
DoW2 - It's in the THQ complete pack after all.
UT Mods - I suspect UT has had its day but would it be worth seeing if there are any decent mods available?
Defcon - Good for late at night when your soul has erroded. Cheap and on Steam.
UT3 mods? UT3 is still a
UT3 mods? UT3 is still a very capable engine. Also, it had a "make something unreal" compo recently too...

That was what I had in
That was what I had in mind... Thinking about it there may be some issues with getting it to run on a couple of machines, namely Skunty's (which will run L4D2 just about) and the laptop which Jon's bringing for me assuming operation car hire fails.
UT3 is pretty scalable but I
UT3 is pretty scalable but I recommend a test on both machines. Can you give the relative parties a nudge? Time is sort of running out.
Some random ideas flicking
Some random ideas flicking through Steam
Dogfighter, as recommended by Skunty...currently £6.99
http://store.steampowered.com/app/42500/
Altitude, think the Soldat of Flying games...currently £2.38
http://store.steampowered.com/app/41300/
Multiwinia, from the same people as Defcon...currently £5.00 in the Introversion Pack
http://store.steampowered.com/app/1530/
Struggling to find decent FPS games that will suit smaller numbers...most current releases are quasi-MMORPG'esque affairs, very little 4-6 a side stuff.
I play Battlefield Bad
I play Battlefield Bad Company 2 with groups no larger than 6 and it works fine because the levels change depending on numbers. And there are loads of game modes other than conquest.
I seem to remember that it
I seem to remember that it doesn't have LAN support?
Ah yes, you're right. Air
Ah yes, you're right. Air Buccaneers?
Not sure where you got that
Not sure where you got that price for Dogfighter it looks like £12 to me still.
As for UT3 i was dismayed to find that it's unplayable when i bought it brand new at full retail price a few days after release, i've not upgraded since then (and in fact detuned the pc somewhat by restoring the default bios). I'll whack it back on tonight or tomorrow and see if it'll run but I'm not holding out much hope. This will probably be the last con for this rig in it's current state, any GPUs knocking about could probs finda new home... likewise any unwanted fans/coolers.
edit: also in the same vein as LFD a co-op survival horror game with multiple classes and rank ups etc that's lanable:

£7.50
I have spare graphics cards
I have spare graphics cards that will run UT3, however they are PCI-E, so won't fit in your mobo...
I have an AGP 6800 GT (I
I have an AGP 6800 GT (I think) that you could use for the con. Its not spare exactly, and its kind of Aggro's, but I could probably swap it with whatever you're using assuming its not ancient...
Pete - I think Jon's main
Pete - I think Jon's main rig could do with a gfx card (or 2) if yours are nab-able.
I still have a laptop which
I still have a laptop which should go to the person with the shittest pc. It has a 9800 gt.
I was looking at killing floor too for the con.
Have to say I wasn't a fan of Altitude when I played the demo.
Nibbles - I shall check them
Nibbles - I shall check them tonight*
I think they are a pair of 7950's off the top of my head
*It might be Friday, fairly busy tonight and tomorrow
I'm thinking a PCI-E slot
I'm thinking a PCI-E slot card will be needed soon after the con, a rebuild beforehand might result in a non-functioning machine and that would be detrimental to my enjoyment of the con.
any thoughts on Killingfloor (checked the multiplayer can be upped above the standard 6 people via a mod)?
Killing floor looks like a
Killing floor looks like a chuckle - everyone in the same boat. Wasn't there a comedy UT2K4 mod where there was wave-after-wave of baddies? That went down well - was quite a laugh.
...until some muppet put the
...until some muppet put the Redeemer into a wall!
I thought the multi sounded
I thought the multi sounded like it had a bit more co-op to it than L4D in that there are specific roles, at the end of the day although L4D forces co-operation it does tend to devolve into people just shouting "Help help help" all to often.
I yearn for a game we can
I yearn for a game we can play where we pack ourselves into a chopper that I can fly into the ground.
IMPORTANT. Need to finalise
IMPORTANT. Need to finalise games as we're running out. So far:
L4D1+2
Dawn of War
+? Are we going to try UT3 with some mods this time? If so, we need to get onto it.
I have UT3 installed. We've
I have UT3 installed. We've not yet been able to get pirated versions of it running (as it does key checks etc), so if we are going to use it we need to make sure everyone has a legit copy. Installing mods should be no major issue once the base game is there. Can someone check the most recent patches etc, and make sure we have copies of them.
After a couple of evenings of DoW practice (using Soulstorm for all armies and unit choices) I can confirm that Sisters of Battle are either;
1) Rubbish if you use them
or
2) Awesome if the AI uses them
It as obviously nothing to do with our ability to play...after all, we'd just Necron Steam-rollered a couple of armies by parking Monoliths in their bases.
Those who have it...Blood Bowl!
I might buy Blood Bowl. Have
I might buy Blood Bowl.
Have update the official list.
I'll invest in Killing
I'll invest in Killing Floor, as it gets some good noise made about it...
Shall we add it to the must
Shall we add it to the must have games list?
It's a Steam Game, so we
It's a Steam Game, so we should be able to folder copy and online validate (same as we did for DoW for Simpson), so it's not vital to have it beforehand, though people may ned to be prepared to have a credit card and steam account to hand.
If there are people at the Mill on Thursday trialling a few games may not be a bad idea, so once we get into full swing on Friday some of the new games have been checked...
I also have Killing Floor I
I also have Killing Floor
I lost my blood bowl at the last con, if anyone has two copies can I have one back.
Is UT3 the one we played last time? They all look the same to me. I thought it did work as I didn't buy it.
It might be with UT3 we have
It might be with UT3 we have to be careful about network connections, and shared keys (as in don't). I thought that was Tribes, but might be wrong.
Angels Fall First is a free
Angels Fall First is a free mod for UT3 and looks superb.

Going to be raping ModDB for UT3 mods.
I'll have a look at Killing
I'll have a look at Killing Floor, but I suspect I will be more than happy to purchase on Steam. My entire plan for games is to bring my steam logon and a hard copy of UT3.
Since I'm not coming due to
Since I'm not coming due to a slight issue of distance seems odd to make suggestions but I saw this today figures it might be worth a look see.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/630/
It's called alien swarm top down shooter based off a UT2k4 mod now done in source in glorious HD (isn't everything HD these days I saw HD paints the other day how long before we get HD bog roll) it's free off of steam and has 4 player co-op (admittedly 4 player is a little small but could always run multiple servers)
I don't think we are above
I don't think we are above trying to network you in...
Can people with more intelligence than me (chimpanzees and upwards then) come up with a way of getting a game working on a LAN that allows a player to connect via a 3G connection on another network?
@Pete - Android tethering.
@Pete - Android tethering.
Think the easiest way
Think the easiest way (assuming we're talking about a 3G dongle here) is to connect it to a decent machine and have it run as server and (optionally) internet sharing. This way all the LANnites can connect to its local address and any external peeps can connect to its external IP...
Might be doable...however
Might be doable...however the "free" 3G connection is on a SIM card rather than a dongle...does anyone have a way of getting that connected to a decent machine?
I have (somewhere...I can probably dig it up) a PCMCIA card that accepts a SIM, however the ariel is a bit poo.
Erm, I can tether my Nexus
Erm, I can tether my Nexus One to a server machine and use that as a Wifi Hotspot.
Thats pretty similar to last
Thats pretty similar to last time...I had my netbook as the 3G connection, and then it was on a different network with Internet Sharing enabled.
Would there be anything stopping us from sticking the netbook on the same network as all the other PC's with Internet Sharing enabled? It obviously can't host, but would it allow others to connect in via it?
Rob, the 3G card in question can only do data connections, so would be annoying for you ina phone (and last time we put 140gig over that connection with non-heavy loads...not sure it's worth risking a fair-usage question on a private contract...)
Fair nuff.
Fair nuff.
I have a T-mobile dongle at
I have a T-mobile dongle at the mill, we can put your sim in it Pete as fair usage stops at 3gig on my sim.
As for getting Matt in, I suggest we set-up a Hamachi network (which we did for Borderlands) which will create a virtual LAN which he can be part of over 3g.
Hamatchi might well do the
Hamatchi might well do the trick.without it the whole server behind connection sharing would not work I'm afraid, not without port forwarding cleverness anyway. Problem is internet connection sharing allows a single external IP to be shared to a network of machines. As the server would be on that network, unless there is a port forwarding rule set up when information comes over the internet to the external connection, the connection sharing has no way of knowing which machine on the network to send it to. Without a VPN (which is what Hamachi is), the server and the internet machine have to be the same one really, and while dedicated servers can be surprisingly undemanding I don't think an Atom is going to do it.
Having said all that (sorry, couldn't stop myself...), if we use Hamachi and make sure that the server machine is one of the ones with a Hamachi connection (we don't have to have all machines running Hamachi) then it should (cross fingers) just work....
