Cloudship Update

NO MORE BALLOONS!

23004 block later and I am finished with balloons! 18 big, 18 small. I'm really glad I've finished the sodding things as it was getting to be a little bit of a chore! It was a pity I couldn't craft all of them but it would have taken 105 evenings of punching sheep.

So, I'm crafting from now on. I have a good store of crafted stuff up on the deck of Atlantis and it's obvious that I'm going to need a lot more sand, cobble and coal. I'm looking forward to digging it all out, though. I'm binning my /giveme tools too, I'll be using iron from now. I have loads of it, so I won't be short on tools. The tasks now are:

General

  • Map of the town
  • New tower (have a drawing)
  • Prettify the blank cliff face caused by map fuckup
  • Prettify the sodding ugly bits caused by my mining

Above deck

  • Chimneys x 4 - done!
  • Rim fence - done!
  • A 2x2 supply pool of water - done!
  • Great hall - done!
  • Bridge - done!
  • Arboretum - done!
  • Governance - done!
  • Sanitorium (Hospital)
  • Carbochemist quarter
  • Wheat/Sugar farm/Animal
  • "Lake"
  • Library
  • Art Gallery
  • Gentleman's Club?
  • Shops - Textile/Dye shop, Metallurgist, Cartographer, Cafe, Hardware, Jewller
  • Cop Shop
  • Move Nether Portal

Below deck

  • Boiler x 2 - done!
  • Reservoir x 4 - done
  • Lava feed x 2 - done
  • Coal scoop - done
  • Humble Great Hall - done
  • Humble living quarters - done
  • Workshop - done (ish)
  • Store room - done!

So, rather a lot but nice and varied. Once I get the chimneys in, I'll go back below decks and start working on the boilers etc.

For buildings, I'll be practising by adding a few to the village back by the mansion. :)

CSA leapt forward over the

CSA leapt forward over the Spooncon weekend. Since my last update, the chimneys are finished, as is one of the boilers and two water reservoirs. The reservoirs were a challenge because I made them striped, which isn't easy on a sphere.

Next to do is another furnace (I think I have enough cooked stone now) and two more reservoirs. After that, the scoop conveyor things, not sure what that will be like. I'm going to have little lava pipes leading to the boilers too. Not sure how many - one or two per boiler. The final underside bits will be the quarters for the humbles and maybe a little trainline that runs around the main bits of the underside.

Above the bow line isn't going to change until I've completed below. I am still scribbling town maps and working out how it might look. The very last thing to do will be the train station tower. Architecture is important so I am working on the 'look'.

Currently working on Boiler

Currently working on Boiler #2. I'm trying to build it in a more efficient way than the last one, which was very much ring-by-ring. There was lots of mud-pile supports, which isn't very quick.

The obvious problem with

The obvious problem with deciding to craft everything is that you have to craft everything.

I'm currently working on water reservoir #3 and #4 and I need a shed load of sand for sandstone. The 4:1 ratio is a killer. On the flip side, it is quite nice to get out in the MC fresh air and dig some sand. I'm using iron as stone is too slow and I have a LOT of iron. Iron is about as fast as diamond, too. The sand is being taken from the bit of island NW of CSA.

If anyone has a load of sand that needs clearing, let me know and I'll come over and dig it out for you.

What is fun about this is that I'm sort-of playing this is as a straight survival mode by not using admin commands. After a bit of random spelunking, I'd taken a lot of damage. After running, heart in mouth, back to bed, I realised I had no spare food. Balls!

The next morning, after watching groaning zombies burn to death, I had to head out to find pig - which was difficult. I found two piggies but only got one sodding bit of bacon. A sprint back home, use the furnace as a cooker and that got me up to half health - enough to cover me for falling off things damage. I checked the wiki briefly but didn't want to start a farm, had no string for a fishing rod (although fancied doing it), no sugar/wheat for cake (loads under glasslake!) so it was piggies all the way.

To maximise my digging time, I elected to dig for sand at night too. Dangerous indeed, it led to frantic running back and forth away from zombies. When I logged out to do some blogging, I had made it back to my ramshackle hut with a lone single heart and no food. That's how I start when I log back in.

I might just have to invest in a farm and some cake. I intend to make a farm up on CSA, so will prolly make a temp one, as well as a temp sugar farm.

Having these decisions and thoughts take a lot of the grind out of MC and although it will mean that CSA is finished a lot later, the journey is much more varied. It is easy in mega projects to get locked into the process of building and forgetting the fun bits too.

Did a little more on CSA at

Did a little more on CSA at the weekend, finished off the reservoirs and nearly have done the lava bits. Not much point taking a picture, tbh because each end looks the same (sort of)!

Next up are the difficult bits: the living quarters and the coal scoop. They are difficult not because placing the blocks is hard but because I've not fully worked out what they're going to look like.

The coal scoop needs to be a bucket-like conveyor. I'm going to build it close to the central walkway. Behind it will be a workshop of some kind. No idea what that might look like.

The living quarters will be based around a great big hall. Which might be a hemisphere or an ellipse. Or I might make it square with columns and the living quarters around the edge. I want it to be utilitarian but at the same time, I don't want it to be too fancy as humbles are slaves, after all!

The other thing I've decided to do is set up a little story on CSA. You'd collect the clues, based on wooden signs and follow the story to the end. It won't be complex but it would be a good way to see the sights on CSA.

The problem with CSA below

The problem with CSA below deck work is that you can do a lot and no-one will see! :) I've been a busy bee, throwing about an hour each night at it and it's WAY more fun than endless sodding balloons.

The coal scoop is done but I'm not keen on it. Mostly because of the resolution of MC. You get the feel for it but you wouldn't know what it was if it wasn't labelled. I've finished the dining hall and accomodation. It's pretty basic - but then it should be. I've also made the structure for the workshop but will not complete it. I think it is a good idea to leave some space under CSA for expansion as MC gets updated. The only thing that's left is a store room, which I want to be a vertical affair with lots of ladders. And boxes, loads of boxes.

After that, I'll be working on the surface, which I am really looking forward to. I will need a shed load of sand for glass and sandstone. I will not be using cobble above the deck, so all stone will need to be smelted. I'll do the big buildings first and then fill in the gaps. I have something of a map but I intend to use that as a guide only. Before I get too stuck in with buildings there, I am going to experiment over at the village - probably extending it north past the stairs of the Mansion. I also have to update the roofs of the village because they are all lighning-suceptible at the moment.

Nice one mate. Sounds like

Nice one mate. Sounds like its really coming on. Will have to pop in and have a look at some point. And see if I can finish disco...

Thank you! The underside is

Thank you! The underside is 'complete' now. There is some more space and some more detail needed but I will wait to see what future updates bring - I can always come back to improve it!

I am now working back at the village, am going to change the roofs for lightning safe ones (sandstone is suitable pretty) and experiment with some building making. I'll also posh-up the base of the stairs to the mansion of DOOM.

I am still punching sheep for you, Byrn, but I've left the wool all over the shop! There is only about 20 at your box in CSA, so I'll collate the other caches I have littered about and move them to St Spawncras, which will be my nearest working point.

So, um, lightning sets fire

So, um, lightning sets fire to things? Seems like the enormous wool structure I'm building is in a huge amount of danger then :(

It can but rain should put

It can but rain should put it out. It's a bit annoying, tbh as most of the CSA balloons poke out from under the base.

I don't think Lightning Fire spreads.

I vote to keep Lightning Fire...consider it monsters for buildings. The roof of the Obsidian Fort is wood, and it seems OK at the mo.

It does spread. It took me

It does spread.

It took me nearly 2 months to build the balloons for CSA - if they were to disappear through a random event, I would be most fucked off. It's not like creeper damage where you repair a bit here and there, the whole lot will go. It also jumps small gaps.

with wood roofs you can make

with wood roofs you can make fireproof wood just stack two half blocks looks like normal wood but won't burn

Really enjoying MC at the

Really enjoying MC at the moment. I'm working on the top side buildings, in particular the great hall. I'm currently working on the outside superstructure and then I'll get to putting in the floor, which is going to be a patterned affair in coloured wool.

Big crafty sleeves
As everything is mined/crafted (inc tools), I take breaks from building to go and dig more stuff out. To do that, I often have to build safe rooms and that's fun too. The variety is great.

I am a a Dwarf and I'm digging a hole. Diggy diggy hole. Diggy diggy hole.
At the moment, I need cobblestone. I imagine that the cobble stored in Big Cave is all organically mined (well, because it was mostly collected before we had Bukkit /give and who the hell would bloody spawn it anyway?) but I like to use this opportunity to expand BC a bit, so I'm digging out stone again. It's a good thing because I need the other materials too - coal, iron ore, redstone, diamond and so on. I have MC in half of the screen and a video of Yogscast in the other, it's relaxing after a long day of using my brain! I'm going to try and push back the North wall to the North wall of the BC station. This will shorten the Fortress of Light tunnel (security will move but be the same) and the stairs leading down from Arboretum will be encased in glass in the main area of the cave.

There is also a a sleepy-room with a bed in BC now, it's by Big Rob's tunnelly bit and has black and yellow around the door. It's there in case you need to get to bed to help others on the server.

After the Great Hall
After GH, I'll get onto The Bridge and Arboretum. The Arbor will be a bullet shaped building with a glass roof - just like the library in the village. The Bridge? Dunno yet.

The great hall is complete.

The great hall is complete. The only change I might make is to replace some of the box-glass with panes. I am holding off on that because I may well run out of glass.

I did a small materials gathering escapade, mostly to get stone, iron ore and coal. Turning cobble into stone to then get stone bricks is a necessary evil.

The bridge
The current project is the bridge. It's going to be an oddly shaped multi-tier affair with an enclosed glass bit as well as a walk-about deck bit. I want the bridge to stand tall (but not taller than the chimney) and to curve over the front of the deck. I will be removing the staircase to the glass walkway as it's not really needed anymore.

Building the bride is a matter of build-and-look-and-build until it looks right.

The bridge is complete. I

The bridge is complete. I didn't like my first attempt at it so it is now an ellipse from the top down with the front cut out of it. I still have a few things I want to do inside it but the super structure is done.

Extra bits will include a map room (a library with a few crates with maps in), duty officer's quarters and some sort of planning table thing which I've not quite worked out how I'll make. Some more experimentation with fences and wood is in order.

Arboretum
I've already charted out the next building, the arboretum, and have a staggered line of dirt coming up to the side of the ship. Grass will propagate up so that I can have green there. Then I will put in a mix of trees and water to make a pleasant place to work. This isn't a food making place but a tree based garden. I am not 100% sure of layout of the inside and this is a problem.

Do I make the garden multi-tiered? If it is a single tier, it would be quicker and easier to do but a very low building because even the biggest trees don't go up very high. If it is multi-tiered then it might be difficult to see what is going on because there is simply too much happening in a small place. Still pondering this one.

Any thoughts on that?

Were you planning on running

Were you planning on running the arboretum on natural or artifical light? I would have thought multi-tiered would be tricky to run on natural light...

You're right. If it was

You're right. If it was multi-tiered then it would need lots of torchlight. I'm going to need a fair number of torches anyway because I don't want creeping bastards in there. So that's a possible. The Arboretum is going to be very glassy, so natural light is possible.

Perhaps I might try multi-tiered and then back it down to single level? I definitely want a waterfall but don't need more than one tier for that. Hmmm.

Although I was going to build the building first and then put the trees in, I think it might be wise to build it inside out. That way I can be sure the height is correct.

The Arboretum in progress. I

The Arboretum in progress. I used a dirt bridge over from the mainland to get grass in there. Note in the background I have started to improve the cliff face by rendering it a bit. I needed the stone for stone bricks (which take ages to make).

I don't think I've posted an image of the bridge. Here it is with the WIP arboretum.

Completed Arboretum. I went for a multiple level in the end. There is some work to do inside but the majority of it is there. Huzzah! It's a little taller than I expected but that's OK because it is one of the few really important buildings.

The next task is the

The next task is the Governance. In CSA terms is the school but it is more like a prison (in CSA, children are treated as criminals until they are brainwashed into society). I've decided to build most of it by casting obsidian. This means building a cast, pouring in lava carted up from big cave (there's plenty in lava flows there) and then dousing with water. The first 2/3 is going to be obsidian (where the children are) and then I'll go stone/stone brick from there.

I've started by making a big pool of lava on the top of CSA, which occurred to me as pointless. Instead, I should have marked out the outline of the governance and poured directly into it. Now I have a big pool of lava I have to move into a cast. Doh!

I'm building the cast out of gravel because I have lots of it and it is easy to clear up (falls under gravity, so I can mine out from the bottom). Making mistakes is going to cost loads of time, so I will be trying to keep those to a minimum.

With sand/gravel, you can

With sand/gravel, you can set up a sort of auto-destruct. At the bottom of the stack, have a torch, then a solid block, then on top of that a stack of sand. Remove the solid block and the sand will destroy itself.

Nice, Pete, I'll do that. I

Nice, Pete, I'll do that. I prefer to use gravel because I have loads of it (and am short of sand) and when you destructo the blocks you get flint for free - sand gives you nothing!

I've started building up the

I've started building up the obsidian blocks on CSA. No room for errors here! Another good tip I found is that if you're building like this, lay down a ring leaving a 1 block gap so that there is somewhere for the water to run. You can then place torches on that wall and keep it lit without them being washed away.

Some update snaps of The

Some update snaps of The Governance:

Imposing at night. Children are kept in a prison until they are fit for society at 16.

Naughty children are punished by being thrown Over The Side. Throughout the Governance, there are signs on the wall that list the sorts of things that can result in being thrown Over The Side. I'll let you discover those.

A better picture of the Arboretum in all it's sunlit beauty.

The Arboretum, showing off the roof - which was not as tough as I had first imagined. I depleted my sand stock in a big way, though. Glass is expensive.
