Windoze updates

Hello,

Hoping for some help getting Windows to update on my Dad's PC, he's having trouble getting updates to go through.

He happilly clicks on the balloon that pops up telling him to update windows, like a good little mouse in a maze, but instead of getting cheese, he gets zapped with a massive report of updates that are not able to be installed.

As they are mainly security updates, he's a little concerned the evil interweb will consume his soul (I paraphrase).

A selection from the cheese board of updates is below;

Security Update for Windows XP (KB928843)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB890859)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB944653)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2008 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB914389)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB920683)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB908519)
Update for Windows XP (KB894391)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB943055)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB935839)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB896428)

I have left out the other ~80.

Any clues as to how my dad can go back to being a happy XP Maze mouse?

Thanks in anticipation for you help finding the cheese.

P.S. Have I taken the cheese theme to far?
P.P.S. You do sell cheese don't you?

There are two updaters:

There are two updaters: Windows Update (the website one, probably what your dad is using) or Microsoft Update (a program that runs on your machine).

Microsoft Update is much better. It can be found in:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\

And is called "MUWebControll Class". Right clickt his and hit "Update" from the context sensitive menu. That will then run the MS updater, which should update any MS software installed on the machine.

Another thing to try is turning off automatic updates, restart Windows, turn automatic updates back on and then restart. 10 minutes later, automatic updates should run off and see what's new.

What might have caused it is a program that fell over while installing. If a program falls over halfway through, it can leave the Windows Installer registry database in a bit of a state. To fix that, you'll have to repair the application that went Tits Up. Once that is done, Windows will have a better chance.

Also, try the usual Adaware/Virus scans.

If this doesn't work, then I'm going to need screenshots, not stories about cheese. ;-) Our office IT men will be back soon, will see if I'm missing anything.

Cheers, will get him to try

I've checked with Mr IT and he's said the same. If he thinks of anything else, then he'll let me know.

He also suggested reinstalling windows as the final option. Or ignoring it. A good Antivirus and anti-ad software can help but won't protect against security vulnerabilities.
