No sure how much this story has gotten outside the US but Bricks and Minifigs is a lego store that sells second hand lego. Well it's a little more than that its a franchise business that franchises out stores that do that. They are not in anyway authorized or owned by Lego themselves
One such store in Oregon took on a large star wars lego collection that a family had built over a number of years the value of which is somewhere between 60k - 100k dollars maybe as high as 200k. The owner of the collection had gotten some medical issues and so his son was trying to raise some money for his medical bills by selling the lego. He took it to this store and signed a consignment agreement with them where the store would sell these legos for a cut of the profits but importantly the ownership remained with the original owner.
They sold some of the collection as time went on and then the owners of the bricks and minifigs franchise decided they wanted to move abroad so contacted the corporate office about selling their franchise. Almost immediately corporate moved to kick the current owner out and take over the store. The exact reasoning here is disputed the franchise owners claim it was illegal corporate claim they were just reclaiming the store as the franchisees were delinquent that's now the subject of a lawsuit but is also only the stage setting.
During the store being seized the franchisees told corporate on the phone (on a recorded line) that a lot of the lego in the store was part of a consignment and not owned by them, the person on the line from corporate claimed the new owners were taking over the consignment. Corporate are claiming they didn't know about this consignment in advance and the person on the call is some junior employee.
After this the owner of the legos sets didn't get paid for anything and after issuing a termination of the agreement and asking for the unsold sets back got told to fuck off and trespassed from the store. He tried to contact the corporate about this they supposedly told him he would have to sue and they would bleed him dry if they did.
The lego owner was told it would be very expensive to sue basically more than the claim was worth. There was also some initial group of people who wanted to help someone in the lego youtube community, they were supposedly threatened with legal action if they did anything.
So this somehow came to the attention of a character called Reckless ben who seems to be somewhat of a prank youtuber who began trying to get the family their lego back with some ... questionalble tactics.
There are allegations of police corruption multiple lawsuits recordings and various dubious attempts to force the company into court or to get the police to press criminal charges against the new owners of the franchise or the corporate elements.
It's pretty wacky, it definately feels like that outfit stole a sick old mans lego and just kept it. Their defence i something like they didn't know it was a consigment they reposessed the store and its inventory (including the unowned legos) in good faith and since the owner didn't file a certain form that puts creditors on notice that they own the consignment and can't steal it they are all good. Also the allege the previous owner sold it all before they took the store. Some of that potentially falls apart there is a recording of when they seized the store where the previous franchisee tells them about it they had also advertised the consignment on their own website. The claim it was all sold may also be a lie there are apprantly timestamped photographic evidence of all the unsold sets in the store before the transfer. The default also sounds a bit suspect some shenanigins where the bank acount and the lease were never transfered to the franchisees so they had no notice or ability to pay these bills the corporation claims they are in default for.
The messaging on their side is also pretty terrible they basically should have kept their mouths shut but the CEO went on a podcast a while back and made a bit of a fool of himself adding to the other sides legal arsenal.
On the youtuber side there is a lot of prank nonsense and maybe some potential extortion stuff some possible threats it's messy there using a prank youtuber with maybe an incomplete understanding of the law is a bit of a risk in my view. I feel like the police corruption is probably not anything this is a small town he's been doing a lot of questionable stuff the cops will often take the side of a local business owner over some loud pranking outsider.
Still he has achieved one thing a story noone had even heard about of a sick old man getting his legos stolen away either by these corporate shit bags or maybe the original franchisee. It's not yet got those legos back and maybe it will end in jail as they're now named in one of the two lawsuits but still lot of attention for something about some legos.
So many videos on the thing floating around the youtubes
