I quite enjoy some of the recent detective like adventure games that have come out in recent years, things like Return of the Obra dinn, Case of the Golden Idol, Rise of the Golden Idol, The Roottrees are dead. This game Incident at Galley house is another of these.
You are investigating a house where many people were found dead using a seance machine. The mechanics are built around working out for a given timeslot and a given place who was there and then when you get that code right you get to watch a sequence of the story. These sequences give you clues as to other locations and where people are going to be to unlock more of the story. So someone in the livingroom leaves mentioning they are going to check on some other person in that persons room you know one time slot on the two people will likely be in that location, you key that in and get the next piece of the puzzle. It's about listening to the story using the information and other sections to locate who is where at any given point.
I'm sure it's not everyone's cup of tea the graphics are relatively simple 2d artwork with some very basic slideshow animation but I really enjoy these sorts of puzzler where you slowly work through learning the story going back and forth each new scene eliminating some other scenes and advancing the overall story the pieces slowly fitting together.
It has some good tools to help a fairly good system to review the scenes in transcript instead of having to watch/listen to them again and that transcript is stored by timeslot and by location and also by person and beyond that is searchable. It has a note taking system built in and a pretty good hint system that gradually gives you more and more direct hints, one section I was stuck on I had to place a person in a time and even though I was sure I'd gotten all the bits right I'd made a bad assumption that one of the characters was dead since the visual aspect of it's storytelling is often implied with audio ques and so what I'd thought happened was not correct and I had to get through a lot of hints that told me things I already knew. Another time it was looking for some very specific entry on a character I had to add to it's list of people and I'd set the name wrong. It does a good job of pointing you in the right direction and then gradually giving you more and unlike some hint systems it doesn't add some artificial penalty or stop short of the answer it will eventually tell you what you need to progress.
I won't say too much about the story as it's a lot of the fun of these sorts of games but it involves a spooky house and a group of people gathering there some of them seemingly invited by an unknown person called Rupert Galley none of the residents know.
If you enjoyed any of the games I mentioned this is another good one to play an interesting mechanic to progress some decent art and a good voice cast it took me a few play sessions to get through I did get caught up in one part and went pretty late so I'd imagine a more sedate play through would give you a day or two maybe three these sorts of games are relatively short.
